William Hernandez, 47, was the only fatality in the pileup, but several others were hospitalized in the weather-related crash on Interstate 84 near Hermiston, Oregon State Police report.
Hernandez was driving one of five commercial trucks involved in the crash, which happened about 6 p.m. Tuesday in the eastbound lanes, according to an OSP news release. Firefighters extricated several people who were trapped in smashed vehicles, and they were taken to hospitals in Pendleton and Hermiston, OSP reports.
Oregon State Police Lt. Bill Fugate said high winds and dust limited visibility, contributing to that crash and several other crashes in the same area Tuesday evening.
The Interstate was closed in both directions for several hours after the crash, and eastbound lanes remained closed through the night to allow for investigation and cleanup of the crash scene, OSP reports.
