The Canyon County Coroner’s Office released the identity of a Boise man who was shot and killed by Nampa police during a traffic stop.

Josiah Gilliam, 26, was identified as the victim in a traffic stop shooting on Tuesday, the coroner’s office stated in a press release. A spokesperson with the office told the Idaho Statesman that Gilliam died from multiple gunshot wounds.

Just after 2 p.m. Tuesday, police pulled over a vehicle at N. 21st Street and Industrial Road, and they found that a man in the front passenger seat had an outstanding felony warrant, according to the Nampa Police Department.

Online court records showed that Gilliam had a warrant out on an alleged probation violation related to drug charges.

A release Tuesday from police said the man in the passenger seat was “reportedly armed with a gun.” Police said he presented the weapon and did not follow officers’ commands, and two police officers then fired their guns.

Gilliam was pronounced dead at the scene after life-saving attempts were made, according to the release.

The driver of the vehicle was shot in the hands and sustained non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

The coroner’s office conducted an autopsy, but it said that the manner of death and circumstances surrounding the incident remained under investigation.

The Caldwell Police Department is leading the Canyon County Critical Incident Task Force investigation into the shooting. Neither the Caldwell nor the Nampa department would provide further information regarding the driver of the vehicle or the officers’ status.

This was the first Nampa police shooting of 2026. In 2025, NPD was involved in two shootings, both of them nonfatal.
