An unrepaired, recalled vehicle started a fire in Caldwell. Here’s what happened next
A vehicle fire ignited a home Thursday in Caldwell, according to the Caldwell Fire Department.
The car had been recalled but never repaired, the Fire Department said in a news release. The fire started in the car but then spread to the home, burning the garage and upper living quarters. Everyone exited the house safely and and no one was injured, according to the release.
“As a reminder, car recalls help to ensure all vehicles on the roadways are safe to drive, thus protecting drivers, passengers, pedestrians, and in this case, your home,” the Caldwell release said. “It’s important to be aware of, and adhere to, all car recalls.”
It’s unclear what kind of vehicle caught fire. The Caldwell Fire Department did not respond to questions about the make and model.
Recalls that cause fires are not unheard of. Earlier this summer, Kia issued a recall for certain Telluride vehicles because of a risk of fire while parked or driving, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
Last fall, Kia and Hyundai together recalled millions of vehicles because of a fire risk, warning owners to park outside. But as of April, most of the cars were still on the road and unlikely to be repaired until at least June, according to The Associated Press.
