Coroner confirms Ada jail inmate’s suicide

The 40-year-old Garden City man was declared dead at 8:45 p.m. Saturday. The Ada County Coroner’s Office lists his manner and cause of death as suicide by asphyxiation.

The Ada County Sheriff’s Office sent out a statement Saturday that deputies were looking into an apparent suicide of an inmate at the county jail in Boise.

The man had been in custody since July 9 on a charge of delivery of a controlled substance. He was found unresponsive and not breathing around 7 p.m. Saturday.

The man was alone in the cell, though deputies check on inmates at least every half hour, according to officials. The man was seen alert just 25 minutes prior, the release said, and there was no evidence of foul play.

According to the release, deputies called for medical backup and began CPR immediately upon finding the unresponsive man. Responding paramedics were unable to revive him.
