Boise Fire Department rescues six ducklings from storm drain

Six ducklings reunited with their mother Friday morning after Boise firefighters rescued them from a storm drain.

“Yeah, ducklings in a water drain is like kittens in a tree,” said 10-year-old Eli Ganieany, who was watching as Boise Fire Department firefighters brought the baby ducks back to their mom.

The six birdlets were following their mother across Allumbaugh Street, at the intersection of Fairview Avenue, Friday morning when they slipped through the open storm drain. Eli’s mother, Michelle Ganieany, saw the mother duck frantically crossing the street back and forth, and decided to call for help.

While BFD sent crews to rescue the ducks, Michelle worked to keep the mother duck from crossing into Fairview Avenue.

“I corralled her a couple times and, I kept her in the parking lot for a while and she was yelling at me,” Michelle said about the ornery mother duck.

When firefighters arrived they spent more than an hour scooping the ducklings out of the drain.

When they got all six baby critters out of the storm drain they brought them back to a safe spot to return them to their mother.
