Boise community honors Mamie Oliver, expert on African American history of the Treasure Valley

The friends and family of Mamie Oliver, a retired professor and history expert, will host a public signing for her most recent book, “Speak: Moments with Dr. Mamie,” and a celebration of her 80th birthday.

The festivities will take place from 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 5 in the 17th floor penthouse at 8th and Main (800 W. Main St.).

Oliver, a longtime Boise resident, moved to the city in 1972. She was among the first African American professor at Boise State University and at Northwest Nazarene University. After retiring from academia, she became a pastor at Mountain View Community Church. Oliver is an expert on the history of the African American community in the Treasure Valley.
