Boise man: ‘Everyone was a target’ at deadly Mexico pyramid shooting
A Boise man traveling in Mexico this week witnessed a frightening fatal shooting at one of the country’s most popular archeological sites.
A Canadian woman was killed and at least 13 others, including six Americans, were injured when a gunman opened fire Monday at Mexico’s Teotihuacán pyramids. The man stood atop the Pyramid of the Moon and began shooting.
Video footage shared by several news outlets showed the gunman, later identified as Julio César Jasso, of Mexico, climbed up the pyramid and randomly shot at tourists as they fled.
Greg Magadini, of Boise, was at the site and shared with The Associated Press and NBC News that he was with a tour group when he “heard a loud crack,” and then heard people screaming. Magadini told the news outlets that the gunman was about 40 feet from him on the same platform of the pyramid, along with about 60 tourists.
“Once I figured it was an active shooter situation, I jumped off the ledge. I was thinking let’s get out of the line of vision of the shooter and essentially get down the pyramid as quickly as possible,” Magadini told NBC News.
According to Magadini’s recount, shots went off about every five seconds. He told the AP that “everyone was a target.”
Magadini also said that at a local hospital, other tourists told him that the shooter “played strange music” and “taunted them,” the AP reported.
The Idaho Statesman has reached out to Magadini via email but has not yet gotten responses.
Mexican officials told news outlets that authorities found a gun, a knife and ammunition among the shooter’s belongings, as well as books and handwritten notes believed to reference the 1999 Columbine High School shooting in Colorado.
According to the AP story, officials did not mention Columbine by name but stated that the materials referenced attacks in the U.S. in April 1999. Monday was the 27th anniversary of the high school shooting carried out by two students that left 14 dead.
