Have unused prescription drugs? Treasure Valley cities part of U.S. disposal day
If you have old prescription drugs in need of disposal, National Prescription Drug Take Back Day is just around the corner.
The 30th Take Back Day nationwide will have dropoff locations throughout the Treasure Valley on Saturday, April 25.
Proper disposal of leftover prescription drugs is essential to prevent misuse and keep harmful compounds out of local waterways and landfills, the city of Boise said in a press release. Putting medication down sinks or toilets interferes with Boise’s water renewal system.
Last year, Boise’s drug take-back day collected more than 300 pounds of unwanted prescription meds. At all Ada County drop-box locations last year, nearly 6,000 pounds were collected.
Boise’s event is set up so that customers don’t have to leave their vehicles: Police officers and city staff will be there to collect meds at a drive-thru operation.
Nampa and Meridian are participating in events Saturday as well, where people may dispose of prescription medications and over-the-counter meds — for pets as well as humans.
