Boise Mayor Lauren McLean on Tuesday announced the selection of a new chief to lead the Boise Fire Department.

Aaron Hummel, who oversees the department’s battalion chiefs, is set to be confirmed to the position by the City Council at its Nov. 18 meeting, and then would be sworn in by McLean.

He was chosen to replace Boise Fire Chief Mark Niemeyer, who is retiring.

“From his first day putting on his uniform, Aaron has served our residents as part of Boise’s Fire Department,” McLean said in a press release. “For three decades he has shown exemplary service and dedication to our community, and has demonstrated, time and again, his passion for his profession. I look forward to his leadership.”

Hummel served in various roles within the department since 1995. The past two decades he was in operations leadership as both a captain and battalion chief, according to the release. The city also said that in his time with Boise Fire, he has contributed to initiatives such as emergency response, EMS coordination, interagency collaboration and regional operations.

Hummel also serves on the Southwest Idaho Fire Chiefs and Emergency Service Users Group for Ada County Dispatch, and is a member of the International Association of Fire Chiefs, Idaho Fire Chiefs Association and Treasure Valley Command officers, the release said.

“Over the years, I’ve had the privilege to serve in nearly every role within the Boise Fire Department, from firefighter to Division Chief,” Hummel said in the release. “It’s an incredible honor to continue serving the people of Boise as Fire Chief. I’m proud to lead such a dedicated team as we uphold our tradition of excellence and continue growing with this amazing community.”

Hummel is a U.S. Navy veteran and graduated from the U.S. National Fire Academy’s Executive Fire Officer program. He is certified as a chief fire officer through the Center for Public Safety Excellence, according to the release.
