Boise power outage affects thousands of customers, several traffic lights

A power outage in South Boise is affecting about 6,811 customers and has caused several traffic lights to go dark, according to Idaho Power.

The outage has had a cascading effect along part of the Broadway and Boise Avenue corridor not far from downtown.

The Ada County Highway District posted a message about the outage on Facebook, reminding drivers to “treat dark signals as a four-way stop.”

According to the Idaho Power website, the outage start at 3:31 p.m. and the cause was somehow “weather.” In an email to the Idaho Statesman, the utility said the outage was specifically caused by “balloons that drifted into a substation.”

Crews were at the site and hoping to restore electricity by a little after 5 p.m., according to the website.
