Police investigate death of woman who was pulled from Boise Bench canal

A woman died Tuesday night in a local hospital after being rescued from a Boise canal.

Boise police and fire units responded to a report of a person in a canal at 7:51 p.m. Tuesday near the 2900 block of West Rose Hill Street on the Bench, the Boise Police Department said in a news release.

Firefighters rescued a woman in the canal near Latah Street, then provided her with medical care until medics transported her to a local hospital for treatment, police said.

The Boise Police Department reported that she died later that night in the hospital.

Boise police spokesperson Haley Williams told the Idaho Statesman that police are still investigating to figure out what happened before the woman went into the water. Williams confirmed that a bystander made the initial 911 call.

The Boise Police Department and the coroner are leading the investigation. The Ada County Coroner’s Office plans to release the victim’s name after her family is notified.

Police said initial reports indicated that a possible second victim was in the canal, but they did not find anyone else after an “extensive search.”

The department did not immediately respond to the Idaho Statesman’s request for additional information.
