Low-cost airline returns to Boise Airport. Book soon, flights to Denver start at just $29
Beginning in May, Boise air travelers can fly to Denver for under $30 each way.
Frontier Airlines will make its return to the Boise Airport after nearly four years and offer the introductory rate. The nonstop route will fly three times per week, on Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday. The first flight takes off on May 15.
“There is strong demand for ultra-low fare travel options in and out of Boise, and we are thrilled to make our return to BOI,” Josh Flyr, Frontier’s vice president of network and operations design, said in a news release. “This is a great day for Idaho consumers, who will now enjoy affordable and convenient air travel to Denver and the many destinations we serve beyond.”
United Airlines and Southwest Airlines each also offer nonstop flights from Boise to Denver.
Frontier’s low-fare flights come with an allowance of one personal item, but additional fees apply for carry-on and checked baggage, and to choose your seat. The airline advertised the flight to Denver for $29, but following the announcement, Frontier’s booking website was selling a one-way ticket for less than $25 with no add-ons.
Frontier, headquartered at Denver International Airport, last operated at the Boise Airport in September 2021. Its restart in Boise brings the regional air hub up to 10 commercial airlines and 27 different nonstop routes.
“This new nonstop service to their Denver hub offers seamless access to the Mile High City, along with convenient one-stop connections across the U.S. and to Mexico, expanding travel opportunities for our community,” Rebecca Hupp, the airport’s longtime director, said in a statement to the Idaho Statesman.
Despite ongoing financial challenges for the commercial airline industry, the air carriers are performing well at BOI, which continues to grow, Hupp told the Ever Onward podcast earlier this month. That makes it an attractive place for the few airlines that don’t already fly in and out of the Treasure Valley.
“The days of bringing in a new airline are pretty slim,” she said. “There’s not that many airlines out there.”
Frontier’s return marks its third foray in Boise. The airline previously offered flights at BOI from 2002 to 2011, and again from 2017 to 2021, according to previous Statesman reporting.
Since 2022, Frontier has remained in talks to acquire fellow low-fare air carrier Spirit Airlines in a deal valued at about $2.16 billion, Reuters reported. Spirit, which also operates in Boise, has so far rebuffed the merger. Spirit previously agreed to sell to JetBlue Airways, but that deal was blocked by the Biden administration over antitrust concerns.
For the third year in a row, the Boise Airport broke its annual passenger record, with nearly 5 million air travelers in 2024. The total was up 5% fro 2023, or about 250,000 more passengers.
“We expect traffic in 2025 to continue to be strong, which is why we’ve been working so hard to ensure the Boise Airport is prepared for that growth,” Hupp said in a statement earlier this month.
