U.S. Postal Service to close Thursday, Jan. 9 for day of mourning. Here’s what to know

All U.S. Postal Service offices, including those in Boise, will be closed on Thursday, Jan. 9 for a national day of mourning in honor of former President Jimmy Carter. Carter passed away on Dec. 29, 2024 at the age of 100. The United States flag will be displayed at half-staff at federal buildings and around the U.S. through Jan. 28.

President Joe Biden declared Jan. 9 a national day of mourning to remember Carter’s life and legacy as the 39th president of the United States. An executive order from Biden ordered the closure of executive departments and agencies of the federal government on Jan. 9.

According to the USPS, regular mail delivery, retail services and office activity will be suspended on Jan. 9. However, there will be limited package deliveries.

Regular mail delivery will resume on Friday, Jan. 10, according to the USPS.
