Greener pastures ahead? City approves plan to bring West Boise residents new park

This story was updated Tuesday, Nov. 12, 2024, with the City Council’s approval of the park’s funding.

Boise Mayor Lauren McLean has been vocal about the city’s goal — part of a national initiative — of giving every resident access to green space within a 10-minute walk from their home. As of October, over 70% of Boise residents have that access.

Soon, West Boise residents will join the club. The City Council on Tuesday approved $250,000 in funding to buy an undeveloped property and turn it into a neighborhood park.

The lot is small — only 0.26 acres — but in a late-October news release, the city said it had “the potential to make a big impact for neighbors” in a “currently underserved” area.

On Thursday, the city of Boise announced a proposal to buy this undeveloped plot of land in a cul-de-sac off of North Welford Avenue.

The site offers a 10-minute-walk proximity to nearly 2,000 residents from over 800 households on the West Bench, according to the release.

On Tuesday, Boise’s City Council approved the purchase of an undeveloped plot of land on the West Bench, which the city’s Parks and Recreation Department plans to turn into a park.

The release celebrated the “creativity” of the proposal amid Boise’s rapid growth.

“As Boise grows, finding large, undeveloped pieces of land is proving challenging,” Parks and Recreation Director Doug Holloway said in the release. “However, this parcel is proof that even small areas can become important green spaces for our residents.”
