A suspect in a felony sex crime case is dead after a shooting involving Ada County Sheriff’s Office deputies Tuesday evening in Northwest Boise.

The shooting took place at the Optimist Youth Sports Complex along West Hill Road, home to various athletic fields, a news release from the Sheriff’s Office said. However, the incident was in no way related to any events, practices or games at the site, according to the release.

Deputy Lauren Montague, spokesperson for the Sheriff’s Office, confirmed to the Idaho Statesman that deputies “fatally shot the suspect.” The release said that no deputies were injured and that law enforcement did not believe there was any threat to public safety.

The Sheriff’s Office said that at about 5:45 p.m., deputies were attempting to locate the sex-crime suspect, a man who was believed to be armed and had made suicidal statements. They found him at the sports complex and he did not comply with commands, Montague said.

After the suspect produced a handgun, two deputies fired their weapons and the suspect was struck. He was pronounced dead at the scene after deputies attempted life-saving measures, according to the release.

The Boise Police Department will lead the Critical Incident Task Force investigation of the shooting, according to the release. The deputies will be placed on administrative leave, per standard department policy in shootings.
