Update: Boise elementary returns to school after forced evacuation over gas leak concerns
Students at Roosevelt Elementary School returned to the building after they were ordered to evacuate on their first day of school over the smell of natural gas.
Intermountain Natural Gas Company ordered the evacuation from the school building after staffers detected the odor, Boise School District spokesperson Dan Hollar told the Idaho Statesman. Students and staff left at 10:40 a.m. to Adams Elementary, located a mile away, Hollar said.
The school district posted about the evacuation on social media and said “students are safe.”
Intermountain Gas responded to the incident and found the smell was coming from a gas leak elsewhere in the neighborhood, but determined Roosevelt Elementary was safe and said students could return at 11:45 a.m., Roosevelt Principal Jennifer Combs said in an email sent to parents.
Roosevelt children ate lunch at Adams before walking back to Roosevelt, Combs wrote. The school said it will dismiss students at 1:15 p.m. as previously planned.
“Thank you to the Roosevelt staff and students for a safe evacuation and to the Adams Elementary staff and students for being gracious hosts,” Combs said.
