Accident injures two and closes interstate for 10 hours after three-vehicle crash

A three-vehicle crash in Payette County sent two people to the hospital on Sunday morning.

A 30-year-old man from Caldwell attempted to re-enter traffic at about 5:30 a.m. after stopping on the shoulder of Interstate 84. As he did so, he was hit by a semi driven by a 48-year-old man from Candler, North Carolina, according to an Idaho State Police news release.

A semitrailer driven by a 49-year-old man from Garner, North Carolina, pulled over to avoid the collision but ended up sliding down an embankment and overturning onto its side.

The driver of the first semi and his 58-year-old passenger from Hickory, North Carolina, were transported by ambulance to a local hospital, according to police. Their names have not been released.

The highway’s lanes were blocked for more than 10 hours southwest of New Plymouth near milepost 18.5 as emergency responders and tow truck drivers cleared the scene.

Police said they were continuing to investigate the incident.
