A Boise high school and elementary school sheltered in place for a little over an hour Friday because of a nearby police investigation.

Capital High School and Valley View Elementary School, which are less than a mile from each other, were sheltering in place, according to a 12:14 p.m. post from the Boise School District on X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter. By 1:35 p.m. the shelter in place had been lifted, according to a post from the school district. The schools are in West Boise.

In the initial post, officials said that students and staff were safe and that there was no specific threat to the schools.

The Boise Police Department did not respond to a request for additional information. But in a post on X, the department said officers were trying to apprehend a juvenile suspect in the same area. The minor, who police said was “possibly armed,” was last seen wearing a black shirt and shorts, the post said, causing authorities to close down Maple Grove Road between Edna Court and Ustick Road, according to a 12:28 p.m. social media post.

The department said at 1:34 p.m. that after searching the vicinity, officers determined that the suspect had left the area. Police were asking anyone with information to contact Ada County Dispatch at 208-377-6790.

Cole Valley Christian School’s elementary campus, which is roughly a mile from the two public schools, was “working along” with police, according to Principal Shelly Crager. In a phone call with the Statesman, Crager said school administrators would decide whether to shelter in place based on law enforcement’s direction.
