Boise & Garden City

It got how bloody hot Tuesday, Boise? Yep, just another temperature record for 2022

It’s been more than six decades since Boise has experienced so much heat this late in September.

On Tuesday afternoon, temperatures hit a record-breaking high of 95, surpassing the 92 degrees recorded on Sept. 27, 1957.

The National Weather Service’s Boise office tweeted a little after 3 p.m. that temps had jumped quickly from 92 to 94, breaking the record. At 4:20 p.m., it updated the reading, showing Tuesday’s high reached 95.

The average high for Boise temperatures in this time of year is around 76 degrees, the Statesman previously reported.

Boise set or tied several summer heat records in 2022, and now autumn has begun with more excessive temperatures. Why? Meteorologist Les Colin, a lead forecaster for the National Weather Service in Boise, said in a phone interview that it’s all about the air pressure in the upper atmosphere.

“We have high pressure aloft over us, which is unusually strong right now,” he told the Statesman. “And it’s going to move away from us on Wednesday into Thursday, and it’s going to cool quite a bit by Thursday.”

The weather service forecasts that high temperatures will fall into the 60s and 70s the end of this week.

With Hurricane Ian projected to hit the Florida coast in the next 24 hours, Colin said the air pressure over the U.S. plays a role into the direction of the massive storm.

“The hurricane moves in relation to all the other waves around the atmosphere,” he said. “So in this case, our high pressure is helping steer the hurricane in the direction it’s now going, which is straight north.”
