New nonstop flights coming to the Boise Airport this fall for those looking to go west

Starting this fall, you’ll be able to fly directly from Boise to a much warmer locale. And you’ll be able to take a new direct flight to San Francisco.

Allegiant announced Thursday that it would offer nonstop flights from the Boise Airport to Palm Springs International Airport in California.

It will fly twice weekly, typically on Sundays and Thursdays, according to booking dates available on the airline’s website. Return flights will operate on the same days.

“The Boise community has a strong link and propensity to travel to California markets,” Rebecca Hupp, director of the Boise Airport, said in a news release. “Combining that demand with Allegiant’s affordable and convenient business model creates accessible transportation for everyone in our community.”

Palm Springs has an average August high temperature of 107, compared with 92 in Boise. Its January high is 71, versus Boise’s 39.

Allegiant also has flights from Boise to Las Vegas, Los Angeles and Phoenix.

Tickets purchased by Aug. 29 for travel before Feb. 7, 2021, will have an introductory $49 one-way fare. It is not clear how the fare will change after the introductory period.

The new direct route is one of two just announced from BOI since the coronavirus pandemic began.

The other new flight will be an Alaska Airlines route from Boise to San Francisco, which will fly twice daily, said Sean Briggs, spokesperson for the airport. That route begins Sept. 1. Prices for that flight will start around $149 for a one-way trip.

“San Francisco currently is served by United Airlines as well,” Briggs said in an email, “but this new route will create additional capacity to the Bay Area and give passengers additional choices when booking air travel.”

Several new direct flights that were supposed to come to Boise this year, including one to Atlanta and one to Everett, Washington, were “indefinitely postponed,” Briggs.

This year was supposed to be record-breaking for the Boise Airport, with a larger number of passengers expected than ever before. Passenger numbers dipped significantly in March and April, and while numbers have not yet returned to pre-COVID levels, more than 150,000 passengers went through the Boise Airport in July. That is down 61% from July 2019, but an improvement from April, when the number of total passengers — just over 18,000 — was down 94% from the year before.

The Boise Airport recently reached an agreement with ride-sharing company Uber, approved by the Boise City Council this week, to standardize pick-up and drop-off locations. That will also add a per-trip fee of $1.50, which Briggs said was similar to other ground transportation operators at the airport. The airport is working with Lyft, another ride-sharing company.
