Update: Coroner identifies Eagle woman who died floating the Boise River on Saturday
A woman who was pulled unresponsive from the Boise River at 1:56 p.m. Saturday and later died has been identified.
The Ada County coroner on Monday afternoon said the deceased was 35-year-old Eagle resident Ashley Surratt. The cause and manner of her death are still listed as pending, and the results of a toxicology report have yet to be finished.
The incident happened just upstream from Kristin Armstrong Municipal Park, according to a news release from the Boise Fire Department. Boise Fire later reported on Twitter that the woman did not survive.
Witnesses said the woman’s raft began losing air, and she was unable to get out of the current. Bystanders pulled the woman out of the water and began CPR. Boise Police and Boise Fire arrived shortly after and took over life-saving efforts.
Surratt, who was not wearing a life jacket, never regained consciousness. She was taken to Saint Alphonsus Regional Medical Center in Boise before she was pronounced dead at 3:11 p.m., according to a news release from the Ada County Coroner’s Office.
Float season on the Boise River officially starts July 1, but the water remains very cold. If a swimmer encounters even a small problem, it can be difficult to remedy because the cold can cause a person to lose the ability to swim, according to Boise Fire.
Boise firefighters urge floaters to always wear a life jacket, stay in the middle of the river when floating and avoid hazards.
