Heat wave over Boise set to bring nearly record-high temperatures Thursday-Saturday
As temperatures rise over the next three days, the Boise area is set to see temperatures that challenge record highs for late May, but the National Weather Service doesn’t anticipate the records falling.
On Thursday, the high is expected to be about 90, with a low of 63, according to the NWS in Boise. The record high for May 28 in Boise is 99, set in 2003. Still, a 90-degree day is well above the average of 73 for that date.
On Friday, Boise is expected to hit a high of 96, with a low of 66. That high would not top the record of 100 degrees, set on May 29, 1987, according to the NWS. But again, it’s well above the average of 76 for that date.
And on Saturday, Boise is expected to hit 98, with a low of 61. That temperature would match the record for May 30, which was set in 1986, according to the NWS.
The Canyon County area isn’t expected to be quite as hot, but on Friday and Saturday it is still expected to be in the 90s, according to the weather service’s forecast.
NWS meteorologist Les Colin said Wednesday that on Sunday and certainly Monday, temperatures will drop back into the 80s and 70s, as a cold front will come into Idaho from Oregon.
Residents might be tempted to recreate outdoors in the hot weather, they should still use caution, officials said. As the coronavirus pandemic continues, state and federal health officials still urge people to avoid large gatherings, practice social distancing and wear masks when in public.
As of Tuesday, more than 2,400 people in Idaho had tested positive for coronavirus and 81 people had died.
