With Christmas tree toppled, lighting ceremony in Downtown Boise won’t happen Friday

The tree-lighting ceremony that brings a crowd to the Grove in Downtown Boise every year isn’t happening as planned Friday night.

Instead, the annual tree lighting will be rescheduled for some date in the future.

“We are postponing the event and more information will be available next week,” Karlee May, events and programs manager for the Downtown Boise Association, told the Statesman by email Friday.

A news release from the Downtown Boise Association said the 45-year-old tree fell over Thursday night, “due to unknown reasons.”

“Public safety is our main concern,” and the tree was damaged in a way that would make it unsafe, the release said.

Separately, the annual Idaho Capitol Christmas tree lighting ceremony is scheduled for Monday, Dec. 2, between 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. in front of the Capitol building.
