An equipment failure of some sort caused wires in a power line on the north side of the Boise Town Square mall parking lot to come down late Thursday, according to an Idaho Power spokesman.

Witnesses saw sparks when two wires touched, and the light in the night sky was visible at least a quarter of a mile away. The area was smoky behind Wenco Inc. at 7609 W. Emerald St. No one was injured.

Power lines were reported down at about 9:20 p.m., an Ada County emergency dispatcher said. Police asked drivers to avoid the area of Cole Road and Emerald Street. Police and fire trucks blocked the intersection and the east entrance to the mall. The roads were reopened about an hour and a half later.

Brad Bowlin, a spokesman for Idaho Power, said that the power company had to cut power in the area to repair the line. He said most of the 1,100 customers affected had power restored within about 20 minutes.
