The opening of a new Garden City apartment complex for low-income individuals and families is a little behind — but a spokesman for the project said Thursday that move-ins are expected to begin by the end of September.
Finishing work is being done on the 64-unit complex at 417 E. 42nd St., on the corner of Adams and 42nd streets right off of Veterans Memorial Parkway. The new apartments replace a dilapidated trailer park.
About 170 people have filled out applications to live in the apartments, and so far the property managers have pre-qualified 30 to 40 people. The leasing office is at 4232 Adams St., across the street from the 68,000 sq. ft. apartment building.
People who want to live in the apartments must prove that they earn 40 percent to 60 percent of area median income. Seven “market-rate” apartments are included for renters who don't qualify for subsidized rent.
The complex has one-, two- and three-bedroom apartments. Amenities at the complex include a computer room, fitness center, community gathering area (with big screen TV, couches, tables), coffee bar, bike locker, outdoor patio and kitchen.
