Update: New I-84 closure dates announced between Meridian and Nampa
Heads up, drivers in Boise and the Treasure Valley. Traffic officials announced new overnight and weekend closure dates for part of Interstate 84.
After high winds forced crews to reschedule construction between Meridian and Nampa, the Idaho Transportation Department provided updated dates for roadwork.
“These closures will allow crews to set 20 girders for the Treasure Valley’s first-ever tri-level flyover ramp at the future I-84 and State Highway 16 interchange,” the Idaho Transportation Department said in a March 2 news release.
While the ramp closures are expected to be completed next week, ongoing overnight lane restrictions will continue through spring, according to the agency.
Here’s what to know:
Where will Interstate 84 close? When?
Eastbound I-84 will be closed overnight between Exit 38 at Garrity Boulevard in Nampa and Ten Mile Road at Exit 42 in Meridian, the Idaho Transportation Department said..
Those lanes will be closed overnight starting at 10 p.m. Friday, March 20, and will reopen at 5 a.m. Saturday, March 21.
During that time, drivers can use Franklin Road as a detour, ITD said, noting that westbound I-84 would remain open.
Construction will again close eastbound I-84 from Garrity Boulevard to Ten Mile Road starting at 6 a.m. Saturday, March 21. That closure will last until 5 a.m. Monday, March 23, with westbound I-84 traffic reduced to two lanes.
During this closure, drivers will be able to exit and re-enter using the new ramps, according to the agency.
How will construction impact Idaho 16?
Construction is also impacting travel along Idaho 16 north of the intersection with Idaho 44, according to the Project SH 16 website.
The Idaho Transportation Department said lane and barrier shifts will occur from 9 p.m. Wednesday to 5 a.m. Thursday.
“During this time crews will be widening SH-16 to the west and connecting the future southbound off-ramp to the mainline,” the state agency said.
“Nighttime flagging will take place as crews shift traffic to the east,” the project website said, and the speed limit will be reduced.
Which freeway lanes will be blocked to traffic?
The Idaho Transportation Department will again shut the stretch of eastbound I-84 between Garrity and Ten Mile to traffic over the weekend. The closure will last from 6 a.m. Saturday, March 21, until 5 a.m. Monday, March 23, according to the release.
Westbound I-84 will be reduced to two lanes during that time.
“Traffic will exit and re-enter using the new ramps,” the state roads agency said.
Additional closures are planned Tuesday, March 17, through Monday, March 23.
“Ongoing nighttime lane restrictions on I-84 will continue through spring,” the Idaho Transportation Department said, noting that closure dates are “subject to change due to weather or other unforeseen circumstances.”
What is I-84 construction project?
Crews are working to erect 20 structural support beams for a tri-level flyover ramp at the future interchange of I-84 and the newly extended Idaho 16, according to previous Statesman reporting and the Idaho Transportation Department.
State officials compared the project to Boise’s Flying Wye, where the I-184 Connector breaks off from I-84 west of downtown Boise.
Once the new interchange is completed in 2027, drivers will be able to exit I-84 and enter the new north-south Idaho 16 extension without stopping, the Statesman previously reported.
The project is expected to “improve regional mobility, provide access to I-84 in the rapidly growing central Treasure Valley, and improve commutes for thousands of motorists,” the Idaho Transportation Department said on the project website.
Current construction is partially funded by Transportation Expansion and Congestion Mitigation funds as part of Gov. Brad Little’s Leading Idaho initiative, according to the project website.
The state roads agency is also working to “replace the outdated I-84 Burley and Heyburn interchanges,” with construction slated to be completed by late 2026.
