The body of a snowmobiler missing since March in Boise County has been found, the county sheriff said.

Tyler Beyer, 30, a U.S. Forest Service employee, was last seen March 12 in Lowman and authorities believed he was riding a snowmobile at the time he disappeared, according to a missing person flyer circulated by the Boise County Sheriff’s Office.

On Thursday, hikers found his snowmobile and body on the back side of Red Mountain, Sheriff Scott Turner told the Idaho Statesman. He apparently was caught in an avalanche, Turner said, and had not been found previously because the snow in that area only melted in the last two weeks.

Boise County Chief Deputy Coroner Mike Johnson told the Statesman that Beyer’s death was accidental and due to suffocation and hypothermia.

Recovering Beyer’s body was difficult, Turner said, because it was in a remote field of rocks. His office, Idaho Mountain Search and Rescue and the Forest Service removed the body at 5 p.m. Friday after working to recover it for eight hours that day, he said. They made an initial attempt Thursday night, but left because of darkness, pouring rain and lightning, he said.

Turner said his agency notified Beyer’s family and that they were relieved to finally know what happened. “I think it was closure,” he said.
