Idaho man reportedly drowned while fly fishing on the South Fork Boise River

A fly fisherman reportedly drowned late Friday morning after being swept up in the current of the South Fork Boise River, according to a news release posted on Facebook by the Elmore County Sheriff’s office Monday morning.

Officials received a report of a possible drowning along the river near Granite Creek shortly before noon on Friday. Residents and Elmore County Sheriff’s Office deputies found the man’s body downstream, where it appeared he’d fallen into the river and been swept up by the current.

First responders pronounced the man dead at the scene a short time later. He has not yet been identified publicly.

Due to the steep terrain in the area, search and rescue teams had to help recover the man’s body from the river.

Sheriff Mike Hollinshead said in the news release that the man appeared to have died of drowning, but an investigation is ongoing.

Hollinshead urged people to be careful around rivers, which are flowing high and fast this time of year as snow melts in the mountains.
