Idaho’s largest teachers union has a new president
Idaho’s largest teachers union has a new president.
Layne McInelly, a teacher in the Boise School District and previously vice president of the Idaho Education Association, has been named president of the IEA, according to an email from the association that was shared with the Statesman.
Former President Kari Overall resigned earlier this week for personal reasons, according to the email.
“I look forward to continuing to help lead our collective work to ensure all students have access to great schools that give them the opportunity (to) reach their full potential,” McInelly said in the email announcement.
McInelly has served as IEA vice president for the past five years and was previously a member of the IEA Board of Directors representing Boise. The president is an elected position among the at-large membership, serving a three-year term.
McInelly is a sixth-grade teacher at Morley Nelson Elementary. He has served on a variety of committees and boards, including the Boise Education Association’s executive board, IEA Executive Committee, IEA Government Relations Committee, IEA Resolutions Chair, and the Chair of the IEA Budget Committee.
Overall’s resignation comes less than a year after the union’s former executive director wrote a scathing letter to the union’s board accusing Overall of a pattern of inappropriate communications involving staff and a State Department of Education employee.
