A Boise man has been sentenced to one year of probation for negligent discharge of waste in violation of the Clean Water Act after disposing uranium down his apartment sink, the U.S. Attorney’s Office announced Tuesday.
James Findlay, 22, pleaded guilty to unlawfully discharging waste into Boise’s sewage system between April 2012 and October 2014. Findlay obtained depleted uranium from an aircraft salvage company. He also extracted uranium from items he purchased. Findlay said he operated an entity called Sawtooth Fusion LLC out of his apartment.
Findlay then dumped the mixture of uranium and acid down his apartment sink, violating the Clean Water Act because of its corrosiveness. After the investigation, it was discovered that no danger was present.
