Man struck by vehicle, dies after walking on I-84 in Elmore County

A Gooding man died late Wednesday night after being struck by a vehicle while he was walking on Interstate 84 near Glenns Ferry in Elmore County, according to Elmore County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies found Gregorio Montemayor III dead in the left lane of the interstate outside of Glenns Ferry around 10:45 p.m. on Wednesday when they arrived at the scene. He had been struck by a vehicle.

The sheriff’s office said Montemayor had been at a party nearby when, after an altercation with other guests, he left the gathering alone on foot. Others at the party said Montemayor had been drinking, though the sheriff’s office was not yet able to confirm the presence of alcohol in Montemayor’s system.

According to the sheriff’s office, a witness reported seeing a man walking down the middle of the right lane of the interstate at 10:44 p.m. It wasn’t immediately clear why Montemayor was walking in the road.

Officials said the driver who hit Montemayor provided a breath sample at the scene and no alcohol was detected. The sheriff’s office did not say whether charges would be brought against the driver.

An investigation is ongoing.
