Kuna man drowns after kayaking accident in Payette River

A Kuna man drowned Monday evening after his kayak capsized in a rapids area of the Payette River.

Michael Callaway, 62, and his wife entered the river below Banks, said Mike Johnson, Boise County chief deputy coroner.

Authorities believe Callaway and his wife, who were in separate kayaks, both capsized between 4:30 and 4:45 p.m. in the rapids, about a half-mile away from a beach area near milepost 78 of Highway 55.

Michael Callaway was swept away in the rapids while his wife was able to hold on to her kayak. He was wearing a life jacket.

At approximately 5:02 p.m., authorities received a call from beachgoers about a body being found, according to Johnson.

Emergency responders were unable to recusitate Callaway, Johnson said. Callaway was pronounced dead at 5:40 p.m.
