5-year-old hit by car after wandering alone in Meridian

A 5-year-old boy was struck by a car around 9:15 p.m. Wednesday when he was walking down Franklin Road alone in Meridian.

A vehicle, traveling eastbound on Franklin near Rose Circle, was slowing down for a stop light when he hit the child at about 20 mph, according to Meridian Police Deputy Chief Tracy Basterrechea. The child suffered a broken femur.

Basterrechea said the child, who is autistic, was taken into the care of the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare because it is the third time the child has wandered away unsupervised from the home.
