Idaho shatters single-day record for new COVID-19 cases; Ada posts big numbers again
Idaho shattered its record for the highest single-day increase in total coronavirus cases Friday, reporting 777 new confirmed and probable cases. The previous record for total new cases was set July 16, when the state recorded 681 new cases.
The state’s health districts added a total of 635 confirmed coronavirus cases Friday and one new death each in Bonneville and Gooding counties. At least 506 people have died related to COVID-19 since the pandemic began in Idaho.
Friday’s numbers were driven by significant case increases reported by health districts in largely rural parts of Idaho, with health districts based in Twin Falls, Pocatello and Idaho Falls reporting more than 100 new cases each. Ada County added 88 new confirmed and 34 new probable cases, according to Boise-based Central District Health.
Four of Idaho’s top five case totals have occurred in the past four days: 670 on Tuesday, 666 on Wednesday, 667 on Thursday and 777 on Friday.
Schools reported more than 100 new coronavirus cases among Idaho students and teachers in the past week, according to the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare’s latest report released Friday. North Star Charter in Eagle once again reported the highest number of new cases by far, recording nine more coronavirus cases as of Thursday, for 30 cases overall.
Fruitland High School — which has the second-highest cumulative coronavirus case count reported to the state at 21 total cases — only reported three new cases this week, compared to 12 last week. Fruitland Middle School has eight total coronavirus cases, according to the report, with three new reported this week, too. Emmett High School reported three new cases, bringing the school’s total coronavirus case count to 15. Payette High School reported two new cases this week, for a cumulative 16 coronavirus cases among students and teachers.
The report excludes online and virtual schools, as well as those with fewer than 50 students. Numbers reported by the state may be lower than the actual number of students and staff with confirmed coronavirus tests at each school.
Ada County led the way with 88 new confirmed cases Friday (12,740 total), and the county’s seven-day moving average grew to 85.7. It was as low as 31.1 cases per day on Sept. 13. Bonneville County followed closely behind with 84 new cases (2,646 total). Canyon County reported 68 new cases (8,153 total) and Bannock reported 48 new cases (1,278 total).
Madison County, home to Rexburg and Brigham Young University-Idaho, continued to post increasing case counts, reporting 54 new cases Friday (1,092 total).
Idaho North Central District removed one case from Lewis County (49 total) and Health and Welfare removed one case from Shoshone County (218 total). Cases are sometimes removed when an investigation determines that an individual’s permanent residence is in a different county or state.
The other counties adding confirmed cases on Friday were Bear Lake (1 new, 52 total), Bingham (19 new, 1,035 total), Blaine (8 new, 695 total), Bonner (3 new, 358 total), Boundary (2 new, 51 total), Butte (4 new, 61 total), Caribou (11 new, 132 total), Cassia (29 new, 838 total), Clearwater (7 new, 85 total), Elmore (7 new, 311 total), Franklin (10 new, 190 total), Fremont (3 new, 256 total), Gem (3 new, 309 total), Gooding (10 new, 309 total), Idaho (4 new, 232 total), Jefferson (12 new, 585 total), Jerome (11 new, 764 total), Kootenai (23 new, 2,948 total), Lincoln (4 new, 84 total), Minidoka (22 new, 793 total), Nez Perce (6 new, 487 total), Latah (20 new, 675 total), Payette (11 new, 862 total), Power (11 new, 278 total), Teton (5 new, 202 total), Twin Falls (45 new, 2,528 total), Washington (4 new, 365 total).
