Idaho reports 165 COVID-19 infections; Ada County goes 2 weeks without triple-digit cases

Idaho reported 165 new coronavirus infections on Sunday Ada County passed a milestone — two weeks without exceeding 100 new daily cases.

Ada County was among 18 Idaho counties that reported new cases of COVID-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus, on Sunday. Ada added 57 new cases, bringing its total to 10,821 since the start of the pandemic in mid-March. However, Idaho’s most populated county also passed a promising milestone: For the last 14 days, its average daily case county has not reached triple digits. That’s a marked improvement from July, when Ada County was adding hundreds of new cases each day, reaching a peak of 345 new cases on July 18.

Ada County has not added triple-digit new daily cases since Aug. 22, when it reported 114 new cases. As daily cases have trended slightly downward in recent weeks, Ada County’s 14-day moving average has remained below 100 since Aug. 25. As of Sunday, the county was reporting a 14-day moving average of 62.6 new daily cases. Prior to Aug. 25, Ada County hadn’t reported a double-digit 14-day moving average since June 30. By mid-July, that 14-day moving average had increased to more than 200 new daily cases.

Only three other counties reported double-digit daily cases Sunday: Canyon County (36 new, 7,063 total), Bonneville (21 new, 1,625 total) and Twin Falls County (16 new, 1,601 total).

State health officials have warned that, in spite of the apparent decline in cases, it’s still critical to follow precautions such as social distancing and wearing face masks to avoid spreading the virus.

New cases were added Sunday in the following counties: Bonner (3 new, 221 total), Cassia (1 new, 536 total), Clark (2 new, 19 total), Custer (2 new, 37 total), Elmore (1 new, 244 total), Jefferson (1 new, 320 total), Jerome (5 new, 563 total), Kootenai (8 new, 2,251 total), Lemhi (1 new, 53 total), Madison (3 new, 230 total), Owyhee (2 new, 284 total), Payette (4 new, 643 total), Teton (1 new, 118 total), Twin Falls (16 new, 1,601 total) and Washington (1 new, 284 total).

Since the start of the pandemic, 31,489 Idaho residents have been diagnosed with COVID-19. Officials report that 16,554 people have recovered from the disease. Health and Welfare also reported 8 new “probable” cases, bringing the state total to 2,486.
