Two students — including second-grader — tested positive as Kuna resumed in-person school

Two students in the Kuna School District have tested positive for COVID-19 after the district restarted in-person classes against public health guidance.

The positives involved a second-grader at Crimson Point Elementary and a student at Kuna High, according to information distributed to parents Friday. Kuna High also has a probable case.

The updates didn’t include information on people who are quarantining or self-monitoring because of the cases.

“While we have two confirmed positive cases and one probable case this week, the good news is that our safety practices of face coverings and physical distancing (have) prevented mass quarantining of entire grade levels or schools,” Kuna Superintendent Wendy Johnson wrote in a parent newsletter.

Central District Health is contacting close contacts (within 6 feet for at least 15 minutes) through Monday, Johnson wrote. But the school district also planned to inform families whose children attended class with “a confirmed or potentially infected person.”

The Crimson Point case involved a second-grader who attended class Tuesday but not Thursday. The Kuna High confirmed case involved a student who attended class Monday but not Wednesday. Information on the probable case was not provided.

Kuna began school Monday with groups of students attending in-person classes either Monday and Wednesday or Tuesday and Thursday, with online classes Friday. The district made that decision despite Ada County’s school districts all being in the red category, according to CDH, which comes with a recommendation from the state to conduct classes online.

The Boise School District has held classes online since school began Aug. 17. The West Ada School District plans to begin online Tuesday.

CDH has said it expects to move Ada County to yellow Tuesday. In yellow, schools are advised to use programs like Kuna’s in-person/online blended format.
