Idaho’s coronavirus hospitalizations, case averages show continued improvement
The latest numbers released Wednesday by the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare show 171 people hospitalized statewide with COVID-19 as of Monday, including 47 in intensive care.
That’s down from a peak of 242 patients hospitalized on Aug. 3.
Meanwhile, the state’s seven public health districts announced a combined 321 new confirmed cases of the coronavirus and four new deaths. The state’s 14-day moving average sits at 303.9 cases per day, while the 7-day average is 299. Both averages are nearing their lowest point since early July.
Ada, Bannock, Canyon and Minidoka counties each reported one new death to bring the state total to 374 fatalities since the start of the pandemic. The case fatality rate is about 1.13%.
The latest death in Bannock County was a female in her 70s, according to Southeastern Idaho Public Health. Analyzing demographic data from Health and Welfare, the three other deaths were all individuals 80 or older, including one female and two males.
Bingham County added a single-day record 79 new confirmed cases for a total of 561. Ada (60 new, 10,571 total), Canyon (41 new, 6,899 total), Bonneville (26 new, 1,526 total), Kootenai (20 new, 2,200 total), Bannock (18 new, 724 total), Nez Perce (10 new, 287 total) and Payette (10 new, 616 total) also saw double-figure increases.
The other counties adding new cases were Benewah (3 new, 119 total), Boise (1 new, 50 total), Bonner (3 new, 211 total), Butte (3 new, 25 total), Custer (3 new, 32 total), Elmore (1 new, 240 total), Franklin (2 new, 55 total), Fremont (1 new, 103 total), Gem (2 new, 192 total), Gooding (3 new, 204 total), Idaho (1 new, 43 total), Jefferson (4 new, 312 total), Jerome (3 new, 545 total), Latah (4 new, 239 total), Lemhi (1 new, 52 total), Madison (2 new, 211 total), Minidoka (1 new, 526 total), Power (6 new, 147 total), Teton (2 new, 110 total), Twin Falls (8 new, 1,526 total) and Washington (3 new, 267 total).
Since the start of the pandemic, 30,536 Idaho residents have been diagnosed with COVID-19. Officials report that 15,585 people have recovered from the disease. Health and Welfare also reported 38 new “probable” cases, bringing the state total to 2,437.
Gov. Brad Little will discuss the state’s status in Stage 4 of the Idaho Rebounds plan during a press conference at 11 a.m. Thursday. Idaho is in its sixth attempt at exiting the four-stage plan.
DAILY DETAILS
Overall hospitalizations: Health and Welfare reports that there have been 1,435 hospitalizations because of the coronavirus, 388 admissions to the ICU and 2,132 health care workers who have been infected. Hospital and health care numbers are based on cases with completed investigations into contacts, not the full number of positives.
St. Luke’s Health System: As of Sept. 1, the hospital was reporting a 14-day coronavirus testing positivity rate of 7%, with 32 patients hospitalized with confirmed COVID-19 out of 464 patients overall.
Saint Alphonsus Health System: As of Sept. 1, the hospital was reporting a 14-day coronavirus positivity testing rate of 16.3%, with 53 patients hospitalized with confirmed COVID-19 out of 310 patients overall.
Boise School District: The district says the following schools have reported confirmed COVID-19 cases among students or staff since Aug. 17: Adams Elementary (2 cases), Boise Online School (1), Borah High (2), Hillcrest Elementary (1), Roosevelt Elementary (1) and West Junior High (1).
Testing totals: At the end of the day Wednesday, Health and Welfare reported that 258,963 tests had been completed statewide. About 11.8% of those have been positive for COVID-19.
