Idaho’s 14-day moving average of new COVID-19 cases drops again; 9 deaths reported
Idaho’s 14-day moving average of new COVID-19 cases experienced a decrease for the 12th day in a row Wednesday, but that news was tempered by the announcement of nine additional deaths.
The state’s seven health districts reported a combined 258 new confirmed cases of the coronavirus on Wednesday, lowering the 14-day average to 337.4 confirmed and probable cases per day. That’s down from an average of 455.4 as of Aug. 14.
Ada County added 76 confirmed cases, according to Boise-based Central District Health, and the county’s 14-day average stayed below 100 for the second day in a row, at 93.1 cases per day. The 14-day average had not been below 100 on back-to-back days since June 29-30.
There were three new coronavirus-related deaths in Ada County (116 total), while Kootenai (2 new, 29 total), Canyon (1 new, 71 total), Shoshone (1 new, 12 total), Washington (1 new, 4 total) and Boundary (first death) counties also announced fatalities. Idaho has lost 337 residents to the virus, including a record 144 reported in August, with a case fatality rate of about 1.09%.
The first death in Boundary County was a male in his 70s, according to the Panhandle Health District. Details were not provided on any of the other deaths.
Joining Ada County with a double-digit increase in confirmed cases Thursday were Canyon (31 new, 6,568 total), Bonneville (29 new, 1,334 total), Payette (15 new, 527 total), Kootenai (14 new, 2,104 total), Bingham (14 new, 417 total), Twin Falls (12 new, 1,460 total) and Bannock (12 new, 587 total) counties.
Thursday’s other counties with new cases included Blaine (3 new, 581 total), Bonner (2 new, 206 total), Boundary (1 new, 43 total), Butte (7 new, 11 total), Caribou (2 new, 35 total), Cassia (2 new, 522 total), Elmore (3 new, 226 total), Franklin (1 new, 50 total), Fremont (1 new, 91 total), Gooding (2 new, 183 total), Jefferson (3 new, 279 total), Jerome (4 new, 516 total), Latah (3 new, 209 total), Madison (1 new, 181 total), Minidoka (1 new, 504 total), Nez Perce (8 new, 247 total), Owyhee (2 new, 266 total), Power (6 new, 113 total), Valley (1 new, 76 total) and Washington (2 new, 245 total).
Since the start of the pandemic, 28,656 Idaho residents have been diagnosed with COVID-19. Officials report that 13,657 people have recovered from the disease. The Idaho Department of Health and Welfare also reported 81 new “probable” cases, bringing the state total to 2,224.

Overall hospitalizations: Health and Welfare reports that there have been 1,304 hospitalizations because of the coronavirus, 363 admissions to the ICU and 1,895 health care workers who have been infected. Hospital and health care numbers are based on cases with completed investigations into contacts, not the full number of positives.
St. Luke’s Health System: As of Aug. 25, the hospital was reporting a 14-day coronavirus testing positivity rate of 7%, with 35 patients hospitalized with confirmed COVID-19 out of 471 patients overall.
Saint Alphonsus Health System: As of Aug. 25, the hospital was reporting a 14-day coronavirus positivity testing rate of 17.3%, with 47 patients hospitalized with confirmed COVID-19 out of 351 patients overall.
Testing totals: At the end of the day Wednesday, Health and Welfare reported that 244,447 tests had been completed statewide. About 11.7% of those have been positive for COVID-19.
