Idaho adds fewer than 300 COVID cases for 4th time in 7 days; 34 new long-term care deaths
Idaho’s daily total of new confirmed cases of COVID-19 continued a welcome downward trend Friday.
The state’s seven health districts reported a combined 249 new cases statewide. Idaho has seen fewer than 300 cases in a day just eight times since July 1, with five of those days occurring since Aug. 9.
Idaho’s 14-day moving average is now 386.4 cases per day, which includes probable cases. It had not fallen below 400 cases per day since July 11.
The Idaho Department of Health and Welfare announced seven new coronavirus-related deaths in Ada County (109 total), while one death was removed from Canyon County (62 total). The Idaho Statesman requested an explanation on the death removed from Canyon County, but had not received a response as of Friday evening.
According to updated demographics on the Health and Welfare website for six of the latest deaths, one was in their 50s, one in their 60s, one in their 70s and three were 80 or older. Five were males and one of the deceased was female.
Idaho has lost 305 residents to the virus, and the case fatality rate is about 1.04%.
Ada County also added the most new cases of any county in the state Friday with 112 confirmed cases for a state-leading total of 9,799 cases, according to Health and Welfare. Twin Falls (10 new, 1,422 total), Power (10 new, 98 total) and Bonneville (43 new, 1,238 total) counties reported double-figure increases.
For the first time since June 18, Canyon County (6 new, 6,323 total) reported a single-digit increase in new cases. The county’s 14-day average is 67.8 cases per day after peaking at 145.6 on July 27.
The other counties adding new cases were Bannock (7 new, 556 total), Bear Lake (4 new, 35 total), Benewah (2 new, 85 total), Bingham (6 new, 388 total), Boise (1 new, 45 total), Bonner (2 new, 191 total), Cassia (1 new, 518 total), Custer (1 new, 17 total), Elmore (3 new, 221 total), Gooding (1 new, 170 total), Idaho (1 new, 38 total), Jefferson (3 new, 245 total), Jerome (4 new, 489 total), Kootenai (8 new, 2,024 total), Latah (4 new, 168 total), Lewis (1 new, 6 total), Madison (3 new, 166 total), Minidoka (1 new, 488 total), Nez Perce (8 new, 209 total), Owyhee (1 new, 261 total) and Teton (7 new, 100 total). IDHW removed one case from Valley County, lowering its total to 74 confirmed cases.
Health and Welfare reported there were 1,988 “probable cases” of the coronavirus (7 new). The state also said 12,359 people were presumed to have recovered from COVID-19, the disease caused by the virus.
Long-term care update
Health and Welfare released its weekly update on COVID-19 in long-term care facilities Friday.
Outbreaks at Idaho facilities increased by 11 to 147 overall, total individual cases jumped by 214 to 1,882 cases, and deaths rose by 34 to 172, with seven new facilities recording a death.
Active cases increased to 1,546 at 108 facilities — up from 1,338 at 99 facilities last week. There are 39 facilities with resolved outbreaks.

Overall hospitalizations: Health and Welfare reports that there have been 1,233 hospitalizations because of the coronavirus, 344 admissions to the ICU and 1,792 health care workers who have been infected. Hospital and health care numbers are based on cases with completed investigations into contacts, not the full number of positives.
St. Luke’s Health System: As of Aug. 20, the hospital was reporting a 14-day coronavirus testing positivity rate of 8%, with 50 patients hospitalized with confirmed COVID-19 out of 477 patients overall.
Saint Alphonsus Health System: As of Aug. 20, the hospital was reporting a 14-day coronavirus positivity testing rate of 18.1%, with 47 patients hospitalized with confirmed COVID-19 out of 341 patients overall.
Testing totals: At the end of the day Friday, Health and Welfare reported that 233,855 tests had been completed statewide. About 11.7% of those have been positive for COVID-19.
