Ada sees 5 new coronavirus deaths, number of infected Idaho health care workers grows
As Idaho’s coronavirus numbers continue to grow, Thursday proved to be an especially hard day for Ada County and the state’s health care workers.
Ada County reported 142 confirmed cases, for a total of 9,002 across the county since the pandemic began. The county also reported five new deaths, bringing that total to 90, according to Central District Health. Ada, which has a mandatory mask rule in place and a limit of 10 people for social gatherings, leads the state in both categories.
Statewide, there were 464 newly confirmed cases on Thursday, bringing the total to 24,906. Idaho’s death count is now 256.
The Idaho Department of Health and Welfare reported another 45 health care workers infected with the virus on Thursday, bringing that statewide total to 1,584.
Canyon County, which trails only Ada in the number of people who have contracted the virus, saw a slight decrease Thursday, with 69 new cases. The county’s total is now 5,816, according to Southwest District Health.
According to Health and Welfare, there are now 1,748 “probable” cases of the coronavirus. The state also reported that 10,089 people are believed to have recovered from COVID-19, the disease caused by the virus.

The South Central Public Health District released its transmission risk categories for the counties within the district on Thursday. Two counties, Cassia and Minidoka, are in the high-risk category. Gooding, Jerome, Lincoln and Twin Falls are in the moderate-risk category, and two others, Blaine and Camas, are in the minimal-risk category.

Overall hospitalizations: Health and Welfare reports that there have been 1,068 hospitalizations because of the coronavirus, 302 admissions to the ICU and 1,584 health care workers who have been infected. The hospital and health care numbers are based on cases with completed investigations into contacts, not the full number of positives.
St. Luke’s Health System: As of Aug. 12, the hospital was reporting a 14-day coronavirus testing positivity rate of 9%, with 45 patients hospitalized with confirmed COVID-19 out of 479 patients overall.
Saint Alphonsus Health System: As of Aug. 12, the hospital was reporting a 14-day coronavirus testing positivity rate of 22.12%, with 49 patients hospitalized with confirmed COVID-19 out of 379 patients overall.
Testing totals: At the end of the day Wednesday, Health and Welfare reported that 216,473 tests had been completed statewide. About 11.5% of those have been positive for COVID-19.
