Idaho reports multiple coronavirus deaths for 8th time in 9 days, and caseload climbs

Idaho reported multiple coronavirus deaths Tuesday for the eighth time in the past nine days.

The state’s seven health districts announced a combined 12 new deaths from COVID-19 on Tuesday. There have been 66 deaths from the virus in the Gem State since July 27 and 214 overall. The case fatality rate stands at 0.96%.

Four new deaths were added in Ada County for a total of 70, according to Boise-based Central District Health. The Idaho Department of Health and Welfare reported five new deaths in Canyon County (37 total), and one each in Kootenai (14 total), Owyhee (2 total) and Washington (3 total) counties.

Health and Welfare updated demographic information for 10 of the most recent deaths — five females and five males. There were two individuals in their 40s, one in their 50s, one in their 60s, one in their 70s and five 80 or older.

As of Aug. 2, there were 195 people hospitalized with the coronavirus in Idaho, including 39 in intensive care, according to information provided by Health and Welfare.

After going three straight days with less than 400 new confirmed cases of the virus, Idaho had 467 cases reported statewide Tuesday. Idaho now has 20,924 cases since the start of the pandemic. Health and Welfare also reported 64 new “probable cases,” bringing that total to 1,367. Additionally, 7,875 people are now considered to be “recovered” from the virus.

Ada and Canyon counties continue to lead the state in confirmed cases, with 7,780 and 4,904, respectively. The state’s two most populous counties account for about 60.6% of Idaho’s confirmed cases. Ada County added 186 cases Tuesday and Canyon added 124.

The other counties adding confirmed cases Tuesday were Bannock (13 new, 347 total), Bear Lake (1 new, 13 total), Benewah (1 new, 48 total), Bingham (15 new, 240 total), Bonner (6 new, 154 total), Bonneville (20 new, 665 total), Cassia (9 new, 446 total), Clark (2 new, 5 total), Fremont (5 new, 59 total), Gem (1 new, 145 total), Jefferson (10 new, 132 total), Jerome (4 new, 389 total), Kootenai (35 new, 1,627 total), Madison (7 new, 114 total), Minidoka (7 new, 420 total), Nez Perce (4 new, 121 total), Owyhee (1 new, 221 total), Payette (5 new, 319 total), Power (1 new, 53 total), Shoshone (1 new, 73 total), Twin Falls (3 new, 1,128 total), Valley (4 new, 48 total) and Washington (3 new, 181 total).

Central District Health removed one case from Elmore County, dropping its total to 194 cases.

Daily Details

Hospitalizations: Health and Welfare reports that there have been 906 hospitalizations because of the coronavirus, 260 admissions to the ICU and 1,311 health care workers who have been infected. The hospital and health care numbers are based on cases with completed investigations into contacts, not the full number of positives.

Testing totals: At the end of the day Tuesday, Health and Welfare reported that 190,520 tests had been completed statewide. About 10.98% of those have been positive for COVID-19.
