Two counties emerge as the latest coronavirus hot spots in Idaho; 8 more deaths reported
Bonneville and Elmore counties each saw a record number of new confirmed cases of the coronavirus on Wednesday.
Elmore County, which includes the cities of Mountain Home and Glenns Ferry, added 30 cases for a total of 178, while Bonneville County — home to Idaho Falls — grew by 83 cases to 495. Figures for both counties were taken from the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare.
The highest number of new cases previously reported in a single day in Elmore County was seven on July 26 and 42 for Bonneville County on July 18.
Idaho also reported eight new deaths from COVID-19 throughout the state Wednesday. There have been 28 coronavirus deaths added the last three days and 176 overall.
Health and Welfare announced three additional deaths in Ada County (53 total), one in Shoshone County (first death) and one in Minidoka County (2 total). Southwest District Health reported two deaths in Canyon County (34 total), and there was one fatality in Kootenai County (9 total), per the Panhandle Health District.
No details were provided on any of the deaths. The case fatality rate in Idaho is about 0.89%.
Using numbers provided by the state’s individual health districts and IDHW, there were 559 new confirmed COVID-19 cases throughout the state Wednesday for a total of 18,569 cases.
New confirmed cases were reported in the following 33 counties: Ada (129 new, 7,065 total), Adams (1 new, 17 total), Bannock (10 new, 295 total), Bear Lake (1 new, 12 total), Benewah (1 new, 39 total), Bingham (14 new, 188 total), Blaine (1 new, 551 total), Boise (1 new, 27 total), Bonner (1 new, 133 total), Boundary (3 new, 33 total), Canyon (106 new, 4,306 total), Caribou (1 new, 28 total), Cassia (8 new, 401 total), Clark (1 new, 2 total), Fremont (6 new, 34 total), Gem (5 new, 132 total), Gooding (2 new, 111 total), Idaho (2 new, 26 total), Jefferson (15 new, 92 total), Jerome (10 new, 351 total), Kootenai (51 new, 1,404 total), Latah (1 new, 68 total), Lemhi (3 new, 10 total), Lincoln (1 new, 44 total), Madison (3 new, 100 total), Minidoka (11 new, 384 total), Nez Perce (1 new, 109 total), Owyhee (7 new, 191 total), Payette (12 new, 279 total), Power (2 new, 36 total), Teton (2 new, 50 total), Twin Falls (28 new, 1,043 total) and Washington (6 new, 168 total).
Health and Welfare also reported 26 new “probable cases,” bringing the total number of probable cases to 1,176. Additionally, 6,472 people are now considered to be “recovered” from the virus.
Inmate with coronavirus dies in Boise
Frank Dawson Conover, 66, was taken from the Idaho State Correctional Center to a Boise hospital for emergency treatment on July 22, according to a press release from the Idaho Department of Correction.
Conover tested positive for COVID-19 at the hospital and was being treated for other serious underlying health conditions, IDOC said. At 4:49 a.m. Wednesday, Conover was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Hospitalizations: Health and Welfare reports that there have been 808 hospitalizations due to the coronavirus, 236 admissions to the ICU and 1,134 health care workers who have been infected. The hospital and health care numbers are based on cases with completed investigations into contacts, not the full number of positives.
Testing totals: At the end of the day Wednesday, Health and Welfare reported that 174,343 tests had been completed statewide. About 10.7% of those have been positive for COVID-19.
