Idaho reports multiple deaths in single day from COVID-19 for the fifth time since July 8

Southwest District Health and Central District Health each announced two deaths from COVID-19, and Southeastern Idaho Public Health reported one new death on Friday.

It is the fifth time this month that Idaho has reported multiple coronavirus-related deaths in a single day. Since July 8, 25 Idahoans have lost their lives to the virus. The total number of deaths is 119 since the start of the pandemic, with a case fatality rate of about 0.87%.

Ada County added two new deaths for a total of 32, according to Boise-based CDH. Southwest District Health announced two new deaths in Canyon County, which has lost 12 people to the coronavirus since July 8, and 18 overall.

Demographics from the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare indicate that four of the latest deaths included an individual in their 50s, an individual in their 70s and two 80 or older. No further details were provided.

Southeastern Idaho Public Health confirmed the third death associated with COVID-19 in southeast Idaho. The individual was a male in his 90s from Bingham County. He had been hospitalized due to complications from the virus.

“My heart is with the family, friends and neighbors who are grieving,” SIPH District Director Maggie Mann said in a press release. “Now more than ever, each of us must do our part to prevent the spread of this virus. We all must do what we can to keep each other safe.”

Using county totals compiled from the individual health districts and IDHW, Idaho added 501 new confirmed cases of COVID-19 on Friday for a statewide total of 12,865 cases.

Ada and Canyon counties each reported cases in the triple digits, with 217 and 102, respectively. It is the 15th day in a row Ada County has reached 100 or more cases, and its total is now 5,179, according to IDHW.

The other counties adding new cases were Bannock (15 new, 190 total), Benewah (1 new, 28 total),Bingham (3 new, 113 total), Blaine (1 new, 541 total), Boise (2 new, 15 total), Bonner (2 new, 87 total), Bonneville (14 new, 203 total), Cassia (2 new, 305 total), Elmore (5 new, 114 total), Franklin (3 new, 33 total), Fremont (5 new, 18 total), Gem (2 new, 80 total), Gooding (1 new, 80 total), Idaho (2 new, 16 total), Jefferson (5 new, 35 total), Jerome (9 new, 303 total), Kootenai (63 new, 958 total), Latah (2 new, 35 total), Lincoln (2 new, 39 total), Madison (5 new, 70 total), Minidoka (5 new, 260 total), Owyhee (5 new, 111 total), Payette (6 new, 205 total), Power (1 new, 21 total), Teton (2 new, 38 total), Twin Falls (13 new, 795 total) and Washington (6 new, 135 total).

According to Health and Welfare, there are 869 probable cases across the state and 3,827 patients are presumed to have recovered. The state also reported 2,155 new COVID-19 tests on Friday.

Hospitalization data posted on the IDHW website from TeleTracking lists 224 patients currently hospitalized with the coronavirus in Idaho, including 33 in intensive care, as of July 15.

Long-term care facilities

On Friday, the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare posted its weekly update on COVID-19 outbreaks at long-term care facilities.

There have been 75 outbreaks totaling 723 cases, an increase of nine outbreaks and 163 cases since last week’s report. There have been 68 coronavirus-related deaths between 14 facilities.

Currently, there are 453 active coronavirus cases among 52 facilities. Below is a list of cities and their long-term care facilities with active cases:

DAILY DETAILS

Hospitalizations: Health and Welfare reports that there have been 570 hospitalizations due to the coronavirus, 170 admissions to the ICU and 855 health care workers who have been infected. The hospital and health care numbers are based on cases with completed investigations into contacts, not the full number of positives.

Testing totals: At the end of the day Friday, Health and Welfare reported that 141,636 tests had been completed statewide. About 9.1% of those have been positive for COVID-19.
