East Idaho reports first coronavirus-related death; statewide case count jumps 60-plus

Bannock County reported the first death related to the coronavirus in East Idaho on Monday, and the South Central Public Health District accounted for 37 of the 66 new cases reported by health districts across the state.

Monday’s death was a 65-year-old male with an underlying health condition, according to a press release from Southeastern Idaho Public Health. The statewide death toll stands at 83, according to the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare.

Cassia County reported 14 of the South Central district’s new cases and increased its total to 75. Ada County added six and increased its state-leading total to 762. Statewide, 2,655 confirmed cases have been reported.

A case was removed from Bonner County, leaving its total at six. In addition to cases in Cassia and Ada counties, new cases were reported in Bannock (1 new, 28 total), Bingham (2 new, 9 total), Bonneville (1 new, 31 total), Kootenai (7 new, 75 total), Canyon (7 new, 286 total), Franklin (5 new, 7 total), Gooding (2 new, 42 total), Jerome (6 new, 150 total), Madison (1 new, 15 total), Minidoka (6 new, 51 total) and Twin Falls (9 new, 358 total).

There are 263 “probable cases” throughout the state, an increase of two from Saturday. Health and Welfare reports that 2,266 cases are “presumed recovered.”

Idaho began Stage 3 of its reopening process on Saturday, and Health and Welfare asks residents throughout the state to continue to follow recommended precautions such as keeping at least 6 feet between others in public, wearing a mask in public, staying home when sick and washing hands often.

Hospitalizations: Health and Welfare reports that there have been 247 hospitalizations due to the coronavirus, 98 admissions to the ICU and 309 health care workers who have been infected. The hospital and health care numbers are based on cases with completed investigations into contacts, not the full number of positives.

Testing totals: At the end of the day Monday, Health and Welfare reported that 47,870 tests had been completed statewide. About 5.5% of those have been positive for COVID-19.

Counties with community spread: Ada, Bannock, Bingham, Blaine, Bonneville, Canyon, Cassia, Elmore, Gem, Jefferson, Jerome, Kootenai, Lemhi, Owyhee, Madison, Minidoka, Payette, Power, Teton and Twin Falls.
