Coronavirus hits 35th Idaho county, and Power confirms first case of community spread

A new Idaho county confirmed its first case of COVID-19 on Thursday, while another became the 20th county in the state to report community transmission.

A female in her 40s who is recovering at home is the first confirmed case of the coronavirus in Franklin County, Southeastern Idaho Public Health said in a press release. The individual is suspected to have contracted the virus while traveling. Franklin County is the 35th of Idaho’s 44 counties with a confirmed case.

Power County, which includes the town of American Falls, has only four confirmed cases, but the Southeastern district reported community spread there when a male in his 40s recently became infected without travel or contact with a confirmed case.

“SIPH will continue to monitor the situation closely and is working with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, city and county leaders, schools, emergency management, health care providers, and our community at large to help prevent the spread of this virus,” the health district said in a press release.

The state’s seven health districts reported a combined 32 new confirmed coronavirus cases on Thursday — the day that Gov. Brad Little announced the state could move into Stage 3 of his reopening plan — increasing the statewide total to 2,525 cases. In addition to Franklin County’s first case, Ada (2 new, 751 total), Bannock (6 new, 23 total), Canyon (3 new, 271 total), Cassia (6 new, 55 total), Gooding (1 new, 39 total), Jerome (3 new, 138 total), Kootenai (1 new, 67 total), Minidoka (2 new, 40 total), Power (1 new, 4 total), Twin Falls (5 new, 343 total) and Washington (1 new, 33 total) counties each added cases.

There are 250 “probable cases” throughout the state, an increase of four from Wednesday. Health and Welfare reports that 2,195 cases are “presumed recovered.”
