Kmart store in Boise closing

The closing of the Fairview Avenue store marks Kmart’s exit from Boise. This is a 2002 photo of the former store that once co-anchored a strip mall at Parkcenter Boulevard and Apple Street. It had opened in 1992 to replace an earlier store at 730 S. Americana Boulevard in a building now occupied by St. Luke’s Health System. Kmart still has a store in Nampa at 1813 Caldwell Blvd.

The Kmart store at the corner of Fairview Avenue and Five Mile Road in Boise will close in mid-March, according to a company representative.

The store began a liquidation sale on Jan. 14.

The company that owns the store — Sears Holdings — also will close the Kmart in Pocatello in mid-April.

“Store closures are part of a series of actions we’re taking to reduce on-going expenses, adjust our asset base and accelerate the transformation of our business model,” spokesman Howard Riefs said in an email to the Statesman Monday.

The Boise store has 56 employees. The Pocatello store has 65 employees. Those who are eligible will receive severance and can apply for jobs at other nearby Kmart or Sears stores, Riefs said.
