University of Idaho to launch Food Safety Center

Funded by a $1.2 million grant, the food safety center will lead efforts across four states to help small and midsized farms improve compliance with safety standards.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture launched a national initiative to help farmers comply with requirements established under the 2011 Food Safety Modernization Act, according to a news release. As part of the network of food safety centers, the University of Idaho will serve Idaho, Washington, Oregon and Alaska. Oregon State University will be the central hub of the 13-state western region.

The center will assist small farms and food processors with technical assistance in complying with the safety rules by providing about two dozen lead trainers and about 200 other people as certified trainers across the region.
