The nation’s largest portable toilet company is making Meridian its new corporate home after relocating its headquarters from Massachusetts.
United Site Services, the portable sanitation company whose toilets line events like Nevada’s Burning Man festival, says the move is intended to tap into a “vibrant Boise business community” and position the company “for growth.”
It also comes three months after United Site Services filed for bankruptcy to flush away $2.4 billion in debt, driven in part by dips in the residential construction market, according to reporting from Reuters. The porta-potty company announced in early March that it had successfully restructured and drained the debt.
As part of its Treasure Valley corporate debut, the company is teaming up with Athletic Club Boise, the nascent professional soccer team, to provide sanitation services and sponsorship, United Site Services spokesperson Jason Monaghan told the Idaho Statesman. That means that fans will soon see the blue and gray potties at games at the Expo Center this spring.
United Site Services already has a presence in the Boise area and was attracted to relocate by the region’s “emerging and booming economy” and growing population, Monaghan said in an interview.
“There’s quite a big difference of a mentality in the Boise area, of kind of that new and emerging (feel), as opposed to the established kind of urban environment that we were in, in and around the Boston area,” he said. The company’s former headquarters were in Westborough, about 40 miles west of Boston.
A “great construction market” also factored into the decision, he said. Construction sites bring key business for the sanitation company, with that market accounting for over 70% of its revenue, according to court records in its bankruptcy case.
Monaghan also noted that United Site Services’ CEO, Bobby Creason, lives in the Boise area.
Monaghan said the company is also eyeing the region’s growing workforce and “talent,” as well as opportunities to “have an impact.”
“We are actively growing,” he said. “As a part of our active growth model, it’s making sure that we not only attract the best talent to be able to serve our customers, but also show our customers that ... where they need to set up shop and where they need to put new operations or expand their operations, we’re there to serve them.”
The new headquarters sits at 2487 W. Navigator Drive, near the northeast corner of Interstate 84 and Ten Mile Road, according to a news release from the company on March 16. That places it within Meridian’s Ten Mile Crossing development, which also hosts Paylocity and Scheel’s.
Monaghan said the company occupied a smaller office in another building within the Ten Mile development for the past five years, but has completed its move. Headquarters equipment and operations have shifted out of Massachusetts, with employees transferring to other nearby branches or continuing work remotely.
“We’re not here to break up families and move people across the country, but we did want to give the opportunity for those people who wanted to” move, he said.
Monaghan did not immediately respond Thursday to a question asking how many people the company employs at the new headquarters and in Idaho.
The company, which has over 140 sites nationwide, said in the release that it plans to continue services in Massachusetts.
Beyond porta-potties, the company rents restroom trailers, hand-washing stations and temporary fencing for events, government agencies, and construction and other worksites, says its website.
Court records show that United Site Services filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in December, a type of bankruptcy that “allows a company to reorganize its debt and try to reemerge as a healthy business,” according to financial media website Investopedia. United Site Services said in its March 5 release that it has continued to operate throughout the process.
