Discount clothing retailer closes its Boise store. What’s next for the site

The Burlington store at Fairview Avenue in Boise has closed.

The store, now vacant, shuttered for good on Dec. 19, according to Morgan Williams, a spokesperson for Burlington. The company did not respond to an email Thursday asking why the store closed.

The discount clothing retailer has removed all its signage from the building at 7201 Fairview Ave., which is attached to an Albertsons grocery store.

Meanwhile, Burlington opened its first store in Idaho Falls in late October. It has two other stores in the state: one apiece in Meridian and Nampa.

“We’re thrilled to maintain our footprint in the community at our nearby location in Meridian, where residents can continue to look forward to amazing deals on top-quality branded merchandise for their entire family and home,” Williams said.

Burlington was called Burlington Coat Factory until about 10 years ago, when it rebranded “to communicate that Burlington is “more than just coats,’” the company says.

The Idaho Statesman reported in 2019 that a developer had plans to raze the store and build a large multifamily apartment and retail complex in its place, which would have involved redeveloping the Big O Tires shop that sits on the same lot. But those plans fizzled.

Now, the store could become a gym, according to documents filed with the city of Boise. Vasa Fitness, a chain with dual headquarters in Utah and Colorado, submitted a plan in August to remodel the building and turn it into a fitness center.
