This downtown Boise shop that sells hand-roasted nuts, brittles has a new owner

City Peanut Shop in downtown Boise is changing hands.

Owner Dan Balluff sold the business to David McGuinn, who took ownership on Oct. 1, according to a news release.

Balluff opened store in 2009, selling hand-roasted nuts, corns and brittles at 803 W. Bannock St. He said Thursday in the release that he decided to sell the business because he wanted to retire and spend more time with family and friends.

“My goal was to create an iconic Boise brand, and to make sure it would continue to thrive long after I stepped away,” Balluff said. “David shares the same passion for the shop, the staff, the customers, downtown Boise and the community. That’s what makes this transition such a good fit.”

McGuinn was a longtime admirer of City Peanut Shop’s brand, the release said. He trained alongside Balluff for a handful of months leading up to the sale, learning the ropes and building relationships with the staff. All employees are remaining with the company, according to the release.

The shop has become one of several go-to spots in downtown Boise for gift shopping and for visitors to the area.

The business has produced about half a million pounds of nuts over the years, which have been distributed across the country and in Europe through online sales, restaurants, breweries, specialty retailers and grocery stores, the release said.

“City Peanut is everything I love about Boise,” McGuinn said in the release. “It’s local, genuine and built on great people. My new role is to protect that and help more people discover what makes it special, one taste at a time.”
